Due to the fact that expiration affects accounts, rather than the individual groups, there are some issues related to the handling of restoring a members account.
Normally, an expired account will not let a member login until the administrator has given them additional time.
If, however, a user of an expired account signs into the user interface, they are given the opportunity to purchase credits through paypal. During this step, all their old groups are deleted. If this were not done, a user could choose the cheapest paypal item and restore access to all prior groups. In other words, this model supports a "One-time setup fee"
Unfortunately, this may take you (the administrator) by surprise.
When using plugins, you should run the "Expunge" function from within the administration control panels User menu, this will alerts plugins of expired accounts. (The apache plugins require this).
