If you are using an inexpensive, cheap, commodity host such as "godaddy.com", please do yourself a huge favor and switch providers before you create big problem for yourself.
These hosts "process" so many people that it is impossible for them to offer anything remotely resembling quality.
Let me state for the record, there is no axe to grind with godaddy.com, we simply wish to spare you, a possible client, from a great deal of hassles.
Godaddy.com in particular has some rather weird, unpredictable settings. They've disabled POSIX with their version of PHP and most importantly, they do not provide a home directory that you can easily access with ftp. Given their track record with screwed up web servers (see the slashdot article below) a website with godaddy.com is an accident waiting to happen.
Other clients have had problems with godaddy.com and while we'll keep trying to work with
clients who insist on using godaddy.com, people who use godaddy.com can look forward to
an awful lot of trouble (or worse, insecure software installations).
While it may be a pain to switch hosts, it will be even more difficult later on as you invest additional time and effort into your godaddy.com based web site.
All this negativity aside, a cheap, commodity host does make an acceptable choice for domain registrars (something that should be separate from your hosting provider anyway!) and I'm sure godaddy.com is a fine choice for that. (geniegate.com uses another cheap commodity service for its registrar)
